The whole thing is set up as miniature stings Nevs producers find a likely candidate, and point him and his crew in the direction of someone being catfished. Nev et al track down the fisher, and bring them face to face with their catfish. The whole thing has a low production value feel, but that works well to keep the show realistic. You see shots of airport checkin lines, crummy motel rooms, and cheap restaurants all things that are a big part of filming a moving show. Nev keeps it real with this choice. Nev also has a good rapport with people. He comes across as an aw shucks sort of everyman he can easily defuse a rough situation with an empathetic hug. In this way, he manages to get most of the people both fisher and fished to open up to the camera in a way a professional interviewer, or actor, might not. Where the show falls flat is, unfortunately, in taking it to the next level and trying to understand explain why this phenomenon happens. I get that Nev calls himself a neutral observer.
